About Moab, Utah
Moab is not just a beautiful town; it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise. Nestled between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, this region boasts some of the most stunning natural scenery in the world. When You Should Elope in Moab & How to Pick Your Date
The most important thing to consider is when to hold your wedding. The first thing is that Moab gets HOT in the summertime. We’re talking regular temps above the 100s. Most people who choose to have an elopement opt to have it in either the springtime or the early autumn. If you do choose spring, you’ll have fields of wildflowers and more colorful rocks that are still wet from the rain. You’ll also have some crowds. You can try to escape them by planning a wedding in mid-May before school releases. I would also recommend planning your elopement in the middle of the week to avoid the weekend surge. Lastly, sunrise is the best time for weddings in the warmer months, while sunset is the best time for winter weddings.
Timeline for Planning Your Elopement
12+ Months Out:

Here are some popular elopement spots within Arches National Park, including specific ceremony locations and details on accessibility and capacity:
Arches National Park – Basic Information
Arches National Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round. The visitor center opening hours vary but there’s usually someone at the visitor center between 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Arches is one of the most popular travel destinations in Utah it gets very busy March through October. Be mindful of the holidays, and any long weekends. Surprisingly (for me personally) the park tends to be *relatively* empty at sunrise and sunset.

Canyonlands National Park is divided into four districts, but the Island in the Sky and The Needles are where you’ll find some of the most breathtaking ceremony spots. Canyonlands National Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, offering visitors a chance to experience its stunning landscapes at any time. The Island in the Sky Visitor Center typically operates from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, though hours can vary seasonally.
Canyonlands is known for its breathtaking canyons, mesas, and buttes, making it one of Utah’s iconic destinations. The park can get quite busy from March through October, especially during holidays and weekends. For a more peaceful experience, consider visiting at sunrise or sunset, when the lighting adds a magical touch to the dramatic scenery.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land offers some lesser-known but equally stunning options for your ceremony. These locations often provide a more private and secluded experience.

Moab Utah Permits and Regulations
When planning your elopement in Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, or on BLM land, it’s essential to secure the necessary permits.
- Canyonlands National Park: A Special Use Permit is required for ceremonies. The fee as of 2024 is $185, depending on your group size and location. You can apply up to one year in advance but make sure to submit at least four weeks before your desired date. More details can be found on the NPS website.
- Dead Horse Point State Park: You’ll also need a Special Use Permit for ceremonies. The Special Use Permit is priced at $60, which includes a $10 application fee and a $50 permit fee. On the wedding day, there is a $20 fee per vehicle, accommodating up to 8 people in each vehicle. If you choose to bus your guests, the charge is $4 per person. Additionally, if deemed necessary by the park manager, ranger monitoring will cost $50 per hour, though it is usually not required. You can apply up to six months in advance. - BLM Land: Regulations vary by area, so check with the local BLM office for permit requirements, which may be minimal or even waived in some locations. It’s best to inquire at least a month in advance. Here’s a link to more information.
- Arches National Park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit. It’s essential to apply well in advance—at least four weeks before your desired date. Fees typically range from $185, depending on the location and size of your group.
For local regulations, be aware that certain areas may have restrictions on the use of chairs, arches, and other structures. Checking with the park service or local authorities is crucial.
How Much Does an Elopement Cost?
There are quite a few costs to keep in mind when planning your elopement. To begin with, you will need a Special Use Permit. This will range between $100-$400. You will also need to get a marriage license, and this will range between $50 to $70. After that, it’s time to start thinking about what you want your wedding day to look like. Between lodging, florists, adventure options, and food, some couples spend up to $20,000 on this life-changing trip but if you want the best vendors on your wedding day the total cost might be way higher.
Legal Requirements for Marriage in Utah
If you fulfill all the requirements, the marriage license will be issued on the same day and valid for 30 days. You can fill out the form online (LINK) but DON’T sign it – both parties have to sign in in person County Clerk’s Office. Be mindful that to complete the application you’ll need the date of the ceremony and the officiant’s name must be provided (but the officiant is not required to appear in the Clerk’s Office).

When you get your marriage license in Grand County, it is valid throughout the state of Utah, not just here. After your elopement ceremony in Moab, whoever officiated your ceremony will need to sign, date, & return the marriage license to the Grand County Clerk within 30 days.
Officiants and/or Getting Ordained
To make your elopement official in Moab, you’ll need an officiant. You have a couple of options: hire a professional who specializes in elopement ceremonies, or ask a family member or friend to get ordained (here’s more information on that). It’s surprisingly easy! Witnesses
In Utah, you must have two witnesses sign your marriage license. If you’re inviting a few guests, this won’t be an issue. But if it’s just the two of you, don’t worry—you can get creative! Your elopement vendors can serve as witnesses, or you might even enlist a friendly hiker or tourist you meet along the way, which can lead to a fun story later. Just remember, your witness needs to be at least eighteen years old. A lot of my couples choose to get officially married before the come to Moab and just focus on the vow exchange and making the day about them and not worrying about the formalities.

Where to Fly in?
Moab and Arches are sort of placed in the middle of the desert and if you choose to fly to a bigger city (Salt Lake or Denver) you’d have to cross at least one mountain pass. You’d definitely have an easier time flying to Grand Junction or Moab itself. There are definitely fewer options available. Here’s a list of the nearby airports.
- Salt Lake City Airport (SLC) is about 209 mi from Moab which would be about 4hr drive through Hwy 6
- Denver, CO (DIA) is about 400 mi from Moab. Which is about a 5 -6 hour drive.
- Grand Junction, CO (GJT) is about 67 mi, 1-2 hr drive.
- You can also fly directly into Moab, UT (CNY).
Getting Around Moab

Moab is a very popular wedding and elopement destination. And this causes an influx of tourists exploring the land. And, for all of us to be able to enjoy the outdoors here it’s super important to follow LNT rules (LNT info link) This concerns not only couples and their guests but all of us who choose to spend time outdoors. By following some of the simple LNT rules, we’re protecting wildlife and the natural landscape. Here are the 7 principles:
- Plan and prepare (this saves your life and others!)
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces ( my rule of thumb is that if it’s squishy, don’t walk on it)
- Dispose of waste properly
- Respect Wildlife
- Leave what you find
- Minimize campfire impact (put out your fires thoroughly, when the fire is really out your supposed to be able to touch the coals with bare hands)
- Be considerate of other visitors
The biggest takeaway is that it’s best to stay on all established trails & roads or stick to rocks. Utah desert’s dirt is very much alive, and it’s called Cryptobiotic soil (more here). It looks like little raised black piles of soil and it’s hard to tell apart from regular dirt if you’re not familiar with it. The same goes for sand dunes, they’re super important for the landscape and help sustain life and prevent erosion. Your photographer and crew should really know how to navigate the landscape. As fragile as it is.
It’s also super important to get the right permits and always carry a copy on you.
