Throughout the warmer months, Moab is a destination that sees visitors from all around the globe. Once the temps dip, however, the parks tend to clear out as a chill sets in across the desert. While this town might not be as popular during the winter, it’s one of my favorite seasons here! As a Moab family photographer, I love working with people to see the magic all year round. Here’s why I think you need to see Moab in winter!
Tips for Visiting Moab in Winter
So, how cold does winter actually get in Moab? It really just depends on where you go. The majority of the town sees highs around the upper 30s and lower 40s throughout January. Occasionally, you’ll see a dusting of snow around the town, but if you live anywhere in the upper states, you are going to feel well-equipped to handle things. If you want a real winter experience, the La Sal Mountains are your spot.
Most of the spots in town offer year-round camping with campsites you can reserve for days at a time. While I adore camping here during the winter, I would highly recommend bringing some cold-weather gear to get you through it!
Because the crowds are smaller, there might be a few more limitations on local businesses. A lot of restaurants limit their hours, and some close down completely.
Lastly, be ready for road closures. Because many of the paths are dirt, winter weather will completely shut them down. If you are ever not sure whether you should continue down a road, there’s no shame in turning around!
Some Exciting Activities to Try While Visiting Moab in Winter
Backcountry Skiing
La Sal is the perfect Moab spot for winter visitors wanting to do a little skiing! There are a few local favorite spots for this, including La Sal Mountain Loop Road and Old La Sal. For those who would prefer cross-country skiing, I recommend The Trailhead, Beginner’s Meadow, and The Junction. The website, Discover Moab, is a great spot to check out all of your options!
Visit the National Parks
If you ask me, a winter trip to the National Parks is a must. Not only are the trails pretty empty, but you can hike for more than twenty minutes without the heat exhaustion creeping in. Both Canyonlands and The Arches are fantastic destinations, and you don’t need a permit for The Arches throughout winter!
Snowshoeing
Don’t feel like skiing? Then try out snowshoeing this winter in Moab! Bryce Canyon, just next door, is my favorite spot for this. Because the snow takes a little longer to melt, you can wander around the trails for some unforgettable hiking. Just be sure to dress very warm–layers are preferable!
Snowmobiling
Want something a little more high-speed? Then try snowmobiling! Most of the trails that allow skiing will also let you rent out a snowmobile. Just be sure to avoid the spots where there’s low snow so you can preserve the vegetation.
