National Parks are some of the best places to get eloped. You will have jaw-dropping views as you tie the knot with your favorite explorer. At the same time, you need to make sure that you can preserve the land for future couples to enjoy. What is Leave No Trace While Eloping and What’s the Importance?
In the past, people really didn’t consider the impacts of their lifestyle on the earth. To begin with, it’s kind of how we got into this whole mess. After humans’ actions pushed multiple species to extinction and decimated most of the wildlife, we decided to reassess the situation. Thus, the phrase “take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.” Pretty straightforward, right? Essentially, the Leave No Trace philosophy acknowledges the impacts we have on Mother Earth and provides a way to preserve our gracious host for future generations.
How to Leave No Trace While Eloping
Plan Ahead & Prepare
Before eloping, map out your plan and make sure it’s achievable to leave no trace. Know where the reserved campsites are and make the reservations ahead of time. Have a backup plan for a secondary ceremony site in case the trail to your preferred site is closed. Pick activities that are accessible to your entire group, and make sure all potential wedding sites are large enough for your crew!
Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces
The trails are there for a reason! Use them on your way to eloping, and make sure other hikers leave no trace and can pass your group without going off the path. Rather than set up camp in remote areas, use the campsites available. And, of course, follow the rules of the site!
Dispose of Waste Properly
Be sure you know the rules for getting rid of waste of all forms, including human and animal waste. Use the appropriate containers around the site for food waste, dig a cat hole when you need to use a restroom and bring a doggie bag if you have pets. Don’t throw things like confetti or flower petals once you are done with your vows because you won’t be able to easily pick them up afterward.
Leave What You Find
Sure, that little rock might not seem like it will be missed, but this is a collective action. If everyone disobeyed the “take only pictures” rule, our parks would be pretty much bare. Plus, you never know which critter needs it for a habitat. The only exception is picking up trash that another hiker might have left behind and helping them leave no trace while you are eloping.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
As devastating wildfires continue to be a part of the news cycle, it’s important to ensure you don’t add to it. Keep your campfire under control at all times, and once you are done, let it fully burn to ash before scattering the remains.
Respect Wildlife
There are countless animals who call the parks their home, and you must respect each and every one. Don’t ever chase or approach a creature, don’t feed them, and don’t interact. If you are bringing along your pup, keep them on a leash at all times so they don’t try to hunt our forest friends. Leave no trace also applies to your own pet’s feces when eloping. So pick it up and don’t let other animals get sick or step in it.
Be Considerate of Others
The park does not close off your wedding site to others throughout your day even if they do only allow one ceremony at the time. Understand that there might be some onlookers, and let them appreciate this area as much as you! Not to get too cheesy, but this land really was made for you and me!
