When You Should Elope in Manti-La Sal National Forest & How to Pick Your Date
While Manti-La Sal National Forest is absolutely picture-perfect all year long, it can get pretty cold throughout the winter with average highs in the 30s. This is also when you will get the most precipitation, leading to those lovely snow-capped mountain views. If you are trying to get the best temperatures, I would recommend the summer throughout the fall. The area is warmest in July with averages in the low seventies. Then, once autumn hits, you get that really luscious foliage with crisp yet bearable temps.
To pick your date, I would recommend deciding what you want your backdrop to look like and then picking the season accordingly.
The Legalities of Eloping in Manti-La Sal National Forest
Manti-La Sal covers over a million acres, with some of the park landing in Colorado. Most of my clients choose a Utah spot for their elopement. If you decide to do so, too, you will want to make sure you meet all of the requirements for a Utah wedding. In order to get your license here, both you and your partner must be present at the Utah County Clerk’s office of your choice. Bring along your ID and SSN numbers! There is no waiting period, but you must use your license within 30 days. You will need two witnesses for your ceremony.
Colorado does not require any witnesses or officiants. (fun fact: they’re one of the only states that allow self-solemnization!) You will both need to apply in person for your license, and there is no waiting requirement.
Regardless of location, you will need to apply for a permit from the USDA. If your event has fewer than 75 participants, you will just need to apply through their website at least 45 days prior to your event.
How Much Does It Cost?
The great thing about a Manti-La Sal National Forest elopement is that the price is extremely flexible. The cost for your special-use permit will be entirely up to the USDA (they change this based on event and season). A Utah marriage license will cost between $30-$50. From there, you will need to budget in lodging, clothing, hair, makeup, food, transportation, flowers, and of course, your photographer!

Now, it’s time to find your ideal location. Here are some options:
- Bears Ears National Monument: This historic site gives you some pretty great surrounding views.
- The Wedge Overlook: located in The Swell, this is a site that will give you an iconic backdrop.
- Little Wild Horse Canyon: This trail puts you right in the center of the legendary rocks.
